10.12.07 Laurentian Karate Club
Teaching Goju Ryu Karate-do
The Laurentian Karate Club has been active on campus
since 1994 exposing the Laurentian University Community and the City of Greater Sudbury to
traditional Goju Ryu Karatedo. The club
has approximately 30 current members and countless students have had the
opportunity to train with us in the past.
In its short history, the club has competed successfully in many
tournaments, produced Provincial Champions, numerous Interuniversity Champions,
and has sent representatives to several National Championships as well as three
World Championships.
Through a well developed curriculum, the club offers a safe, social
setting for the exchange of ideas and development of skills. The club has hosted self-defence courses,
volunteered for demonstrations, and many members are involved in the campus
Walkhome and other programs. The
club has also hosted numerous provincial, national, and international seminars.
The Laurentian Karate Club is a non-profit club and all instruction is done
on a volunteer basis. Instructors are
recognized internationally and carry certifications from the NCCP, The National
Karate Association of Canada, The Seiwa Kai, and the Ontario College of
Teachers (to name a few). The
instructors are also certified in First Aid and CPR and adhere to high
standards of coaching and pedagogy.
Club members are primarily students, faculty, and staff of Laurentian
University. Members of the general
public are also welcome through our affiliation with the Department of Active
Living. The Laurentian Karate Club accepts members 16 and over.
